Thank You Mrs. Hudson!
With just a month left until we move, days are spent sorting and purging and organizing stuff to be boxed up. I was wading through computer photo files the other day and came across this great one of Zack and his kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Hudson.
Now, we all know that most kindergarten teachers have little magical birds and fairy dust in the air all around them, and Mrs. Hudson was no exception. She is everything you want your child’s kindergarten teacher to be. Warm and exceedingly kind. Gently firm when she needed to be. Silly at just the right times. She never let those magical birds and fairies go to her head. She made me want to be a kindergartner again.
Mrs. Hudson is mom to a Z-man of her own. He’s a little older than our Zack, and sports the more orthodox H at the end of his name instead of a K. In many ways, her Zach and our Zack are very similar guys. I can’t tell you how many times I tapped into her wisdom not just as a teacher, but as the mom of a good-natured, happy-but-distractable boy. I can’t tell you what a relief it was to know that, even with a crowd of 30 students, my Zack would never be lost in her classroom.
In Mrs. Hudson’s class Zack learned to read and and write and raise his hand. He was introduced to Charlotte and Wilbur, Despereaux, and Henry Huggins. In Mrs. Hudson’s classroom Zack painted masks and blew his first bubble gum bubbles and played chess. He studied worms and learned how to package an egg in order to drop it safely from the top of a very high wall. (Green Jello is the key!) In Mrs. Hudson's class Zack made new friends and together with them saved pennies for kids on the other side of the world. In Mrs. Hudson’s class, Zack learned how much he loves to learn.
Mrs. Hudson is one of the warm, shiny people of this world. We’re so glad we spent the past year with her. While we can’t wait for the adventures that lie ahead in first grade and beyond, I know Zack will never forget Mrs. Hudson.
